Maggie Ott: February 28, 1945 - May 18, 2008

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Maggie passed away unexpectedly and suddenly at home on May 18, 2008. Making art brought her so much joy, and it pleased her to share her paintings and love of watercolor, so we hope you'll take some time to look through her site.

Right now, none of Maggie's original paintings are for sale. If you are interested in purchasing a print, first please email her daughter, Christine Ott prior to using the check-out feature. Thank you for your understanding.

Maggie's family held a memorial "celebration," per her wishes, to honor her life, on July 19, 2008, at her home in Hebron. Feel free to look at the pictures here. It was wonderful to see everyone, and to have such a large turnout, which is evidence of Maggie's influence on the people in her life.

She was a force of nature, and life is so quiet without her. She will be missed, always.

Maggie's Obituary

MARGARET ELAINE McMURRAY OTT, 63, of Hebron, MD, formerly of Little Egg Harbor and Howell, NJ, died suddenly on May 18, at home. She was born in Orange and was the daughter of the late Charles Augustus McMurray II and Elaine McDonnell McMurray. She grew up in West Caldwell and graduated from James Caldwell High School and Newark School of Fine Arts. She raised her family in Howell and later moved to Little Egg Harbor, before moving to Maryland in 2003. Maggie was an accomplished watercolor artist and art teacher. She taught workshops in various locations in New Jersey, and at the Art Institute and Gallery in Salisbury, MD, and the Dorchester Arts Council in Cambridge, MD.

She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Catherine Cullen. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, C. Michael Ott; three daughters, Christine Ott and son-in-law Glen Cullen of Trenton; Karen Arena of Englishtown; and Jennifer Graga and son-in-law Richard Graga of Farmingdale. She had six grandchildren at the time of her passing: Eric Arena, and Richie, Michael, Megan, Aaron, and Emma Graga, and was happily anticipating the arrival of Matthew Cullen, born exactly three months after Maggie's death. She is also survived by her mother-in-law Catherine Ott of Denville; three brothers, Charles A. McMurray III of Hackettstown, James F. McMurray of Lawrence, KS, and Dennis J. McMurray of Salina, KS; and a sister, Mary O'Halloran of Warrenton, VA. She also leaves behind 10 nieces and nephews, as well as her "adopted" Maryland family, Chris, Maddy, and Solange Purdue.

Services were private. Donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 114 Baptist Street, Salisbury, MD 21801.

The Artwork of Maggie Ott

A recent transplant from New Jersey now living in Hebron, Maryland, after completing my studies at Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, I attended classes at Jersey City State College.

Recent achievements: solo show in the Price Sisters Gallery in Tuckerton, NJ in November 2003 and at the Ocean City Art Center, Ocean City, NJ in February. Both shows were very successful.

Awards: New Jersey Watercolor Society, Atlantic City Arts Center, Garden State Watercolor, Tewksbury Historical Society, and the Art Institute and Gallery, Salisbury.

I teach transparent watercolor to students in coastal New Jersey: Brigantine, Ocean City, Galloway, and Tuckerton.

I also teach three-day workshops in various locations.

While it is nice to get awards, the most important thing to me has been the friendships and camaraderie that has occurred in our classes. My students have developed and progressed with their work in a fun and non-stressful atmosphere and they have brought the most joy to my art life. Being able to teach as a professional artist leaves the stress out of the classroom because my curriculum does not have to be approved by a Board of Education. Many of my students have become very close to my heart and I know we will be lasting friends.

Maggie's Workshops

My classes are for students who are dedicated to a willing and free spirit, who are ready to allow their inner creativity to take them on a most wonderful journey with outstanding techniques and with a medium that returns wonderful results. I cover a variety of watercolor techniques, from the traditional to the unorthodox, in order to help students create art they love! I offer peacefulness, joyfulness, the nuances, the intricacies and the possibilities and the GREAT FUN of painting.

Part of my goal as an instructor is to help students prepare for and encourage them to enter shows. Many have been accepted into juried shows and a few of them have taken awards and sold their work.

Take a look at some of my art.
